In recent years, multigenerational housing has seen a resurgence as an attractive living arrangement for families. Multigenerational housing refers to the practice of several generations living together under one roof. It could include grandparents, parents, children, and sometimes even great-grandparents, all cohabiting in a shared space. This traditional living arrangement, which was common in earlier generations, offers a plethora of benefits that foster stronger family bonds and create a more supportive and cohesive community.
We’re all about family here. And we recognize that each family we meet is inimitable. They have been formed by different histories and may be split up in different locations. We have personal experience with family situations like divorce, blended families, and multigenerational housing. In fact, we bought one of our earlier homes in order to care for my ailing parents. This was more than a little complicated as my parents had developed conditions and needs that made it challenging for them to live together in a typical small in-law space. We designed and constructed a customized in-law space that provided what they each needed but in close proximity to each other and us. Sadly by the time we were able to pull off the above, my father was only with us for a matter of months. We cared for my mother for as long as we safely could until she needed more care than we could provide at home. This lasted for a few years, but it still felt like we should have made the decision to combine our households much earlier than we did.
Currently we live in a home that is open and accommodating to our youngest daughter who has cerebral palsy and will continue to need support in all areas of her life as an adult. We purchased this home with this in mind as we can imagine multiple different ways we could configure things within the existing footprint to create her own apartment, and/or a living area for a live-in helper to take on some of our responsibilities as we age. We've built beautiful hardwood ramps where steps used to exist, and created a fully accessible and wide open bathroom, sometimes referred to as a "wet room".
We understand the importance of keeping family together, but we also understand the complexities of searching for a home to do so in. With each client, we bring our personal passions for getting to know people as well as our professional experience with matching families to their ideal homes.
